Sell homes of ‘Putin cronies’, says London mayor
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has called for the homes of Russian oligarchs with close ties to President Vladimir Putin to be confiscated and sold off to help the victims of the war in Ukraine.
Khan argued that many of these properties were bought with corrupt money and should not be allowed to remain in the hands of individuals who are complicit in Putin’s actions. He also stated that the UK government should impose sanctions on Russian oligarchs and freeze their assets in the country.
This move by the London mayor comes amid growing international pressure on Russia and its allies following the invasion of Ukraine. Many countries have imposed sanctions on Russian individuals and companies in an effort to isolate Putin and his regime.
It remains to be seen whether Khan’s proposal will be implemented, but it has sparked a debate about the role of Russian money in the UK property market and the need to hold accountable those who support authoritarian regimes.
