A mother accused of murder remained “calm” as paramedics treated her teenage son after he was fatally injured at their County Durham home, a court has heard.

The 35-year-old woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is charged with the murder of her 14-year-old son at their home in Ushaw Moor.

During a bail hearing at Durham Crown Court, the court was told that the woman showed no emotion as emergency services attended to her son on the night of the incident.

Prosecutors allege that the woman caused the fatal injuries to her son, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The court heard that the woman has been diagnosed with a mental health condition and is currently receiving treatment in a secure hospital.

The judge denied bail for the woman, citing the seriousness of the charges against her and the risk of harm to herself and others if released.

The case has been adjourned until a further hearing later this month.
